RotaryNews has started the #SaveTheRotary campaign. Based off the old Save The Seven campaign, started in 1999, which was partly responsible for bringing the RX-8 to the US, the #SaveTheRotary campaign aims at reminding Mazda about their grassroots support. What can be seen with some minor enhancements is 4 round tail lights, 2 per side: Round tail lights are a signature of Rotaries. We know that Mazda engineering has been hard at work with improving the Rotary for the much stricter world wide emission standards.

Detroit Belle Isle event is a "1/2 and 1/2 Creamer" Race for Team Sahlen RX-8 GT Team
Submitted by Berny Herrera on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 - 10:53am

June 2, 2012 Detroit - The Grand Am Detroit 200 could best be summarized for Team Sahlen as being the best of times and the worst of times.

The race results show that Team Sahlen captured a fine 8th and 9th place finish, with the 2nd fastest race lap. This 9th place finish was the best for the #43 Mazda so far in the 2012 season. The fine result saw the #43 close up on a Top Ten position in the GT Team Championship.

The fantastic result for #43 came from several different combinations of team effort. 1st off, Joe Nonnamaker drove a great race, keeping pace with the lead pack of GT cars. This pace allowed the #43 to stay on the lead lap. Then under caution, the race strategy as well as fine pit stops saw the Mazda lining up to the front on race restarts. As the race wore along, all GT competitors seemed to be suffering from contact with the Street Circuit’s Concrete Walls. The #43 was also not immune to this dilemma, hitting the wall 2x as well. But in the end, perseverance and good pace paid off with the strong 9th place run.

SpeedSource Regains Momentum with @ 2nd Place Finish at Detroit (Diesel Next Year)
Submitted by Berny Herrera on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 - 10:38am

June 2, 2012 Detroit - The GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series rolled into the Motor City for Round 5 of the 2012 season. For the first time in series history, GRAND-AM would race at the historic Belle Isle Park converted street-course in downtown Detroit, MI. Anxious to carry momentum from a strong NJMP showing, the crew of the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 was ready to take on the challenge of a fresh racetrack.

Friday morning greeted the teams with heavy rain. Belle Isle Park challenged all the Rolex Series competitors with rough road surfaces and localized flooding from the heavy rainfall. All teams had to endure the terrible track conditions as well as very limited test time during the A.M. session. Upon exiting pit lane, the #70 Castrol Edge Modspace Mazda RX-8 encountered a large puddle of standing water which stalled the car. Upon re-firing the engine, water ingested through the intake tract hydro-locked the engine forcing the team back to the paddock for a swap. “I’ve never seen anything like that before,” commented David Haskell, Team Technical Director; “there was so much water out there that we actually had a puddle within our air box!”

Team Sahlen RX-8 GTs makes charge for lead in the Global Barter 250 at New Jersey
Submitted by Berny Herrera on Wednesday, May 16, 2012 - 5:49pm

05/16/2012 New Jersey - Team Sahlen came into the New Jersey weekend with high hopes of repeating the 2011 podium sweep by Mazda. These hopes were heightened when Dane Cameron placed the #42 at the top of the time charts on both Test Day and Practice Day. Wayne further solidified these hopes with a very fine 5th place qualifying effort.

“We came into the weekend with a very nice set up from last year. But we were not satisfied with just running like we did in 2011, so we came into the weekend with several different set up directions, in hopes of finding that last little bit of extra speed. It seems to have worked as we kept pace with many of the new cars in GT this year at the New Jersey event.” – shared Wayne Nonnamaker
